Documentary "Four Horsemen" - Review

Have recently watched "Four Horsemen" - documentary on current global economic issues. It was interesting, because I have recently read a book Confessions of an Economic Hit Man  by John Perkins who is also featured in the documentary. What I found is that though the general idea towards "greater good" is natural, the ways how issues are explained in the movie and the reasons and solutions that are briefly outlined are not consistent sometimes with either logic or obvious observations. 33:00 - The narrator states that the inflow of lending money into the housing market led to an unprecedent inflation. "House prices rose and rose." This completely satisfies the classical economic theory that guys just praised a bit earlier in the video. Because interest rates were low and people borrowed more and more to buy properties. But is it not because there is always a demand for property? People have to live somewhere. At 33:40 Prof. Simon Johnson (for...

The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith

The Wealth of Nations: An Inquiry into the Nature & Causes of the Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith My rating: 5 of 5 stars Have just finished this book. It has been a long process, but fully rewarding. It's the hardest book I have ever read. Firstly because of the author style and secondly because of my habit to read everything in the book and not jump to the next section until I understand the current one. I have heard of Adam Smith's ideas from other sources before, but now I see that majority of those who said Smith is this or Smith is that - haven't read this book at all. In addition to that, many people think theories of 17th and 18th century don't work today. however during the whole time of reading I have had a feeling that Smith has written about today with only a few differences. I highly recommend this book to everyone who is interested in how everything works around us. View all my reviews

Frozen (2013)

Watched Frozen in cinema today. Really enjoyed it. All evil guys were punished properly this time. I was happy! Though as usual there was a couple of scenario glitches, but in general very positive and interesting story. The only thing that disappointed - 30 minutes of ads with addition of some irrelevant Disney short cartoon before the movie. 30 fucking minutes! However it's not related to the movie itself. I have read some reviews and opinions about the movie so far and some of the quite interesting. One of them in particular is that it is the first movie that teaches girls they don't need to be dependent on a male to resolve the problems. Well, this is not very accurate to say the least. Though indeed in the movie girls try to resolve the issues themselves, but it doesn't go very well without extra help no matter whether it comes from a male or a female. What has truly amazed me was the idea that Disney explicitly portrayed true love in this movie not just as a pat...

Wine - Two Italian Boys Moscato

Very good moscato. Naturally freshly sweet with fruity and floral notes. Best moscato I have tasted so far. My other wine posts

Wine - Peter Lehmann Cabernet Merlot 2011

Very soft nice wine with a hint of bitter dark berries in the beginning, plum, red cherries, leather, warm milk, caramel aftertaste. Beautiful! My other wine posts

Haute Cuisine, Fine Dining, Steaks, Dumplings, Quality and Other Matters

Today had an intense conversation at lunch regarding the food. No, The Food. Discussion evolved around experience with very expensive restaurants that use some famous brand names, but the food is not so good. Some people say it is "experience" that people pay money for. Then the experience should make food better for money. As an example there were some stories: 4 (four) dumplings for $60 that were made in front of you, $45 stake which is shit, $600 bill for 5 (five) people dinner after which they went to nearest McDonalds to eat, because they were still hungry. There is an opinion that it's better to cook for yourself - get the best meat (if we are talking about stake) from the shop, get the grill - there you go. But then some people say that then maybe chefs will do IT too? This supposed to mean that IT skills are the same as cooking skills. Quite possibly if the cooking skills were not just something basic that everybody can do. But then again there are peop...

Wine - Speri Valpolicella La Roverina 2011 Classico Superiore

This one is the first Italian wine I have ever tasted. The blend is 70% Corvina, 20% Rondinella and 10% mixed of Molinara and other autochthonous varieties, aged 10 months in large oak barrels. Very good stuff. Delicate taste with fruits, oak and dark berries in it. Worked very well with beef and duck. My other wine posts

Wine - George Wyndham Shiraz Grenache 2012

Dark berries, citrus, spices, hints of chocolate, leather. Like the shiraz+grenache mix. I think grenache adds sweetness to it. Really enjoyed this one. Bought @ http://danmurphys.com.au/

Wine - Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages 2011

Pretty nice wine. Light and citric, some spice.

Wine - 2012 Shiraz Special Reserve 195

Bought this wine from Liqourland  for $6 with an intent to use in cooking. Used 150ml in preparing Pave de boeuf with Roquefort sauce and gratin dauphinoise  and then drank the rest. Good wine in regard to price-value ratio. Dark berries, alcoholic, citrus.

Django Unchained - Review

I have been eager to watch this movie since seeing a trailer a while ago. It was intriguing and I thought the premiere shouldn't be missed. My curiosity and aspiration was also fueled by the announcement that Tarantino himself was planning to visit the premiere in Sydney. It was a bit of disappointment to get the announcement just before the session that Quentin was not coming, but it didn't really matter, because the movie was amazing, incredibly fun and thrilling. Though it's pretty lengthy (2:45) I haven't got bored at all. After a couple of beers I looked for some quiet scene to go to the bathroom and there is such a scene in the movie. Possibly right in the middle, when many people in the cinema decided to pay a very quick visit to the toilet. Almost entire audience laughed and giggled following the story line on the screen through the movie. Very saturated, soaked in soulful music, technically perfect, flawlessly played by the great actors - this movi...

Movie - Dark Shadows (2012)

Well made story about a vampire, his relatives and a witch. Very visually picturesque, especially on the scenes with Eva Green and Johnny Depp. Interesting humor. Beautiful soundtrack. I have seen some negative reviews, but I personally didn't expect a lot from the movie and just really enjoyed this nicely depicted story by Tim Burton. Recommended .

Shrek the Halls

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Toy Story 3

It is a great movie. ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0435761 ). Especially love the moments with "The orphans!" at the beginning, and when Mr Potato Head stick his body parts to the wrap and then the pigeon sat near. But there are some moments that are not smooth. The main fail is too light punishment for scoundrel Lotso after all he did to the toys. So if the audience is not educated or doesn't have enough personal experience, they might think that if you behave bad to others, betray them using their kindness and providing some extremely inadequate excuse ditch them in danger - nothing is going to happen to you as a result!   The fair ending of Lotso in the movie would be him to travel all the way to the fire. Because in the situation from the movie, there is no need to wait for good deeds from this sort of creatures or to wait until they do something bad to you.

Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure

Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1216516 Если кто не в курсе, там один из основных сюжетных моментов - конфликт Tinker Bell и её друга Теренса (Terence).
