We have recently had a conversation with some colleagues about luxury cars, club memberships that cost several thousand dollars, luxury clothing brands - in the end it came up to a statement that it all just to show others your status in the society.
The strange thing though is that everyone I talked to agreed that in Australia today the social status is just nonsense. People who pretend they have high status are considered in general as wankers.
Who cares what car I am driving? In Australia anyone can buy virtually any car that she/he likes, any brand of clothes, go to any level restaurant at least once a month and live in any suburb of any city without any problems.
What status we are talking about here? How that social status is going to help anyone?
I understand that ages ago higher social status gave people some privileges.
What sort of privilege people are seeking today?
People have got some hierarchies at workplace, but this not the status thing, but business roles. On a personal level the subordination is nothing, because work is not considered by many people a part of their true life.
It's very interesting to see why people show off something others don't really appreciate.
